Flight Level and a half by
Scott Draper
Is there a proper phraseology for reporting leaving 33,500? The AIM
doesn't say; it always assumes you're at a whole number flight level.

contact terminology? by

ATC: airplane 67Z, "traffic westbound at your 2 o'clock, 5000 feet"
Now, if I see the traffic, it's "airplane 67Z has the traffic"
What if I don't have it visually, but it shows up on my traffic
display? I've heard stuff like "yep, got 'im on the fishfinder" but
I'm wondering if there is a...

Unclear Clearance by
Mitty
OK, just to distract you guys from "IFR with a VFR GPS" ---
Flying into Grand Marais MN last week (KCKC) I was out maybe
30 miles at 7000 and got "Cleared for the approach, maintain
4000 until established. Contact advisory ... "
The reason for the early clearance was, I think, that I was
at the...

Instrument Student Pilot Filing IFR by
Roy N5804F
Is it legal for a non-instrument rated pilot to file IFR in his own name in
order to undergo instrument training while accompanied by his CFII ?
In other words.
Who should file IFR for a training instrument flight ? The student or the
CFII ?
Thanks for input

AUTOPILOT PROS & CONS by
STICKMONKE
I got my IFR rating 7 months ago. I use the KAP140 autopilot a lot. From
climb-out to MDA/DA. I find it really helps in my management of the plane
and the IFR flight. I am interested in comments regarding the pros and cons
of a heavy use/reliance on the autopilot.

Intercepting the ILS by
[email protected]
Hello,
Yesterday I was out getting an IPC. We were doing the Stockton, CA
ILS. ATC
had us intercepting the localizer at 2000 feet. The altitude for
glideslope
interception is 1800 ( underlined ).
My old CFII taught me that the glideslope interception altitude on
the chart is a minimum...

Class B bust my fault or the controllers ? by
Antoņio
Today I flew into KBFI (Boeing field) which is class D and has
extentions that underlie the Class B that require close attention to
altitudes and headings so as to stay clear. Today the winds were
favoring 31L (and 31R) and I came in from the west on the Vashon
approach--the most common approach...

filing IFR plan for VFR flight conditions by
Paul Safran
I seem to have read or been told once that,
one can file an IFR flightplan with remark for
VFR flight conditions when not instrument rated,
or current, to get routing and practice within the system.

Why Not Use PC To Make Glass Cockpit? by
Le Chaud Lapin
Standard disclaimer applies: I still have my copy of Flight Training
next to the porcelain throne. Ahem.
However, as I flip the pages of this magazine, I cannot help but think
that companies like Garmin are getting off a bit easy.
Being a software developer, I am very suprised to discover that...

Crossing a stepdown fix high by
David Brooks
Is there any problem with controllers or examiners if I cross a stepdown fix
several hundred feet above the depicted altitude? I believe that, legally,
I can be at any altitude above the crossing minimum, but would this be a
bust of the PTS +/-100 tolerance, or cause a problem for ATC?
For...

I too had my first experience in IMC yesterday. I got my ticket last

TYQ and then it...

Why is a standard hold right turns? by
Roy Smith
It has always struck me odd that a standard landing pattern is left
turns and a standard hold is right turns. Having a left patterns for
landing makes a bit of sense, since the pilot is on the left side of the
cockpit and has a better view of the runway making left turns.
But, for IFR holds,...

Icing Airmets by
Andrew Sarangan
I've been watching the icing airmets for some time now, and it seems
to be getting more and more conservative to the point of being
unrealistic. For example, right now the freezing level is at 5000 ft,
MEA is at 2500 ft, yet we have an airmet Z that goes all way from SFC
to 18k. How could you...

Autopilot use during approach by

I've moved up to a new plane that includes an S-Tec 50 autopilot. It has

Follow NAV input, Hold a set Altitude, and approach mode which tracks NAV
input more closely.
What do the regs say about the permissible use of an...
