Fixed vs All Flying tail by
Kevin Neave
Apart from the *better* handling of a fixed tailplane,
is there any aerodynamic advantage of a fixed tail/elevator
over an all flying tail?
I can't help feeling that when the stick's not in the
middle the fixed tail/elevator looks less efficient
(And I used to prefer the light stick forces and...

Re; will I fit? by
Andy Davey
I'd disagree with the DG100 rating. I'm also 6'4' and
in the fat B@#$%^d category, with long legs, big feet,
and shortish torso.
I tried one once, and had probs with canopy, and also
footspace(nose too narrow)
It did have a sheepskin seat cover though, which may
have made a bit of difference.
I...

[US: NJ/PA/NY] Governor's Cup for 2004 by
Papa3
2004 marks the first major change in the Governor's Cup. We're going to a
pure Turn Area Task (TAT) format. Details are on the website, so please
take a look. Rules are not yet updated, but the Task Sheets should be
self-explanatory. If you're not sure about how to fly a TAT, please check
in...

Will I fit? by
c hinds
I am 6'3" 205 lbs. and currently shopping for a sailplane. I fit OK in
the SGS-1-26, 2-33, Puchacz and can squeeze into a Grob 102 with about
1/2" of clearance to the canopy.
What about Libelle, ASW-15b, DG100, Standard Cirrus, Jantus B ? You
know, all of those "other" sailplanes.
Any and all...

When to speak up....? by
Gary Boggs
Our tow pilot crashed our Wilga yesterday at dusk. He was coming in with
the flaps down and the power pulled back. At about 200ft he decided his
descent rate was too great and pulled the flaps up. He said he was too slow
but never added power and the high rate of descent continued right into...

Tuesday morning of this week, OSTIV President Loek Boermans sent me a

definition and creation of a new class of gliders- MIcrolift.
Professor Boermans introduced...

Pellet Variometer wanted by
Mark James Boyd
I'd love to get my hands on one or two pellet variometers.
Mostly for training purposes, but will probably go in an
(older) sailplane. I've read about Cosim, Robinson, Pfeiffer, and Makiki
pellet varios.
If anyone has comments about these quaint devices, or
some they'd like to part with for an...

Bela sent me an e-mail about the 'new" tow plane at Salida. I also saw the
post in this news group. The club has been talking about maybe doing western
Nebraska this year instead of the mountains. Not decided yet. One of our guys
bought a Russia and may want to bring it to Salida. I'm not sure...

Does anyone have a set of coefficients for the Nimbus 3 in 25.5 m mode? A
reasonably accurate polar diagram is acceptable too.
Thanks

Cambridge "V" by
JJ Sinclair
Hi Gang,
When I page up on my Cambridge GPS, I get a "V" for velocity or groundspeed. My
question is: Is this always displayed in Knots, even though I programed it to
use MPH?
This same signal is fed to my B-100 via the NMEA cable and displayed in MPH &
Track on page 2 of the Borgelt B-100. Mike,...

Commercial - New PDA Cradle Options by
Paul Remde
Hi,
I have made significant updates to my Cumulus Soaring Supplies web site to
highlight some new PDA cradle options.
RAM has introduced some new "powered" PDA cradles which have an integral 12V
to 5V power converter. These are a nice option if you have a PDA that
doesn't fit into my standard...

SSA National Convention, every year, every other? by

Questions of costs and benefits,

Who benefits from annual SSA national convention?
Do glider and electronics vendors benefit by annual
show, vs the cost to them to go?
Can you, vendor, afford to go annually and is it cost/benefit

Sparrowhawk/Apis for rent by
John
Was following the Sparrowhawk thread and like the post concerning
sponsering a glider at a contest to gain exposure.
A perhaps better idea would be for Sparrowhawk, Apis, Silent, etc. to
loan a glider to the big soaring sites (Bermuda High, Seminole Lake,
Minden, Turf, etc.). That way many people...
