ANR squeal on descent by Juan Jimenez
Somebody explain to me why ANR headsets squeal when you are descending from FL180 and lower in an unpressurized aircraft. Flightcom is modifying their Denalis to deal with this but they say all ANR's do this. ???? Juan

"The Aviator" by Orval Fairbairn
My wife and I went to see "The Aviator" yesterday. Comments: The planes and some of the flying sequences were great -- especially the S-38 and the reproduction of the H-1 and the CGI of some of the other planes. Acting: Leonardo DiCaprio should *never* have been cast as a pilot! His "flying"...

Shooing hangar sparrows by [email protected]
So I've got this big new glider hangar with a 60 foot door opening, and while I like birds (in this case sparrows / fly-catchers), my Yorkie dog goes nuts when they are in "her hangar". They don't nest but occasionally poop, being birds after all. Any suggestions on how to humanely repel /...

Concorde vs Tornado F3 by aardvark
I sincerely hope that someone might be able to come to my aid in this very dark moment. The scenario is the following: About a month ago I watched a very interesting program on the Discovery Channel called “Flying heavy metal”. A large part of the program focused on the Concorde, during which...

Burning Question (737) by Zomby Woof
Why is it, in all the pictures I've ever seen of any version of the 737, that Boeing STILL doesn't cover up the main wheels? Maybe the latest model (-800?) does...if so, I stand corrected. ZW

Would like to learn to fly, but... by [email protected]
Having become dangerously addicted to MS Flight Simulator, I am starting to develop a hankering to learn to fly for real. However I'm having a bit of trouble reconciling this desire with my concern about CO2 emissions and climate change. My wife and I tend to buy reasonably fuel efficient cars and...

Twin engine prop rotation? by Chris Wells
What are the aerodynamic implications of prop rotation on a twin? I was reading an article about the development of the P38, and apparently they changed the prop rotation from "inwards" to "outwards" - why? Is this a standard rotation on twin engine planes now?

CFII instructor as passenger (FAA) by Jim Burns
There is nothing in the FAR's that says an instructional flight or flight instruction must begin and or end on the ground. If you are legal to operate as PIC and current to carry passengers, your CFII can obviously just be a passenger. At some time he can also pull out the foggles and say "here,...

Mandatory 100hr checks - when? Also Dry Lease by Michael
It's always been believed that if an aircraft (US registered) is rented out, a 100hr check is required. People believe all sorts of things that aren't true, including this. I am now trying to find a reference to this in the FARs. You will be looking a long time. The above text doesn't...

WAC vs Sectional by [email protected]
I currently subscribe to the Airchart IFR and sectional service. I was looking at changing to the WAC and IFR service. What exactly is the difference between the WAC and sectional charts? Do the WACs show all the MOAs/restricted/etc areas? Are all the same airports listed? Thanks

Bose comes through for my Christmas too! (was "Present from Bose!") by Kyler Laird
I've posted lots of messages about how much my wife and I appreciate our Bose headsets, followed by several about how my wife's headset became unusable after an upgrade (and a couple of attempts to fix it). Now I get to go back to praising Bose. I just got off the phone with Joe Tesini of Bose...

Student Pilot & Aviation Headsets by Jessica Stanley
I am starting my flight training and I would like some feedback from other pilots on aviation headsets. Like most student pilots, I am on a budget but I do want a good, sturdy headset that will last me at least 5 years. Also, I would like an ANR headset. I have heard very good things about the Bose...

Phonetic alphabet -- dixie instead of delta? by Roy Smith
The wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_phonetic_alphabet) on phonetic alphabets says: "At some United States airports, the use of Delta for the letter D is avoided because it is also the callsign for Delta Air Lines. "Dixie" seems to be the most common substitute." The tower at...

Control Vision's patent by Kyler Laird
I hate software patents. They *really* burn me when they're on things that I've already discussed and planned to do. Here's one. http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/323-full.html#188748 Any GPS can tell you where you are but Control Vision's Anywhere Map system tells you where you...

Want to purchase PA34-200 Seneca by Grasshopper
Has anyone owned or flown a Seneca I or Seneca II? If so, please share thoughts on the aircraft. I want to purchase an aircraft with optional 7th passenger seating so I can take my whole family places. -- ____________________________ Ah, Young Grasshopper. Sometimes it is eyes that blind a man.

will this fly? by Lee Elson
Please excuse the cross post, but the topic might be of interest to several groups. I'm wondering whether providing light aircraft transportation services (people and/or cargo) and consulting to small businesses is likely to be a successful approach to setting up a very small aviation business. In...
