Men in black by Darius
I have no clue who the 8 or 9 men in black suits with radios were this morning when I go to the airport. I did see their rather LARGE jet parked out behind the building. So I'm out sitting in the plane when another LARGE jet came screaming in, kicking up dust in front of me. Some guy walked over...

Montana PC12 crash by Kingfish
I fly a PC12 for a charter company, and ours has the 8 seat executive seating. There is a 9 seat airline config for the plane available - add in the two crew seats and you're still short three seats for the 14 people that were lost in the crash. Did they have kids sitting on the floor in the aisle?...

Aviation Through A Lens Part 2 by Jay Beckman
I took the hint and have begun migrating images off Photosig and over to pBase. If you want, take a look at www.pbase.com/flyingphotog and tell me if you get bigger, better images (and I hope, not a lot of crap to fight through.) Thanks, Jay B

ATC Question, or what was going on on the East Coast Tues? by John Kirksey
I was listening to Tuesdays ATC at JFK and PHL from around 5pm that day, and both airports were basically at a standstill for departures. At PHL planes were back and forth between tower and clearance getting clearances and revised clearances. At JFK the tower was relaying clearances to the...

Ground vehicles and talking to the tower by Ben Hallert
Hi guys, A friend an I were stuck in traffic next to Santa Monica airport. I looked over and saw the gate leading into the airport, and I joked to my friend that if we had a transceiver, we could drive up to the runup, then call SMO ground and request transition across the runway to the lower...

Time for certificate issuance? by Jeremy Lew
I passed my IA checkride on April 17th, and still haven't received my newfangled plastic certificate. The FAA airmen database lists the rating, so I know they're aware of it. The DE gave me a temporary certificate which expires in less than a month, what should I do assuming it doesn't come soon?...

Fast online flight planner by drauk
I have put together a free online flight planner which GA pilots migh find useful: 'fly.dsc.net' (http://fly.dsc.net). It's somewhat unusual in that it instead of using a database of onl aviation waypoints you can plan using any place as a waypoint. Thi means it is good if you want to fly to a...

Are we missing out on something? by Bob Gardner
As you may know, the FAA folks in Oklahoma City put out a quarterly "Designee Update." It is intended for instructors and designated examiners, in the interest of standardization and getting the word out on policy changes. It is available to anyone at the AFS-600 site. I asked Paul J. Maenza, its...
