Question by Charles S
I apologize for posting this 'non-home built' question here. But I believe here is where I am most likely to discover the answer. My question involves how the Germans in WWII fired cannon through the propeller hub of V-12 engines. I cannot see how this is accomplished, since to my knowledge there...

A Good Story by Badwater Bill
Another one of those things I get from docents out at PASM. Don't know if true, but certainly sounds like it. If not, a good yarn anyway. Piggyback Hero by Ralph Kinney Bennett Tomorrow morning they'll lay the remains of Glenn Rojohn to rest in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in the little town...

Can someone explain wing loading? by Frederick Wilson
Thanks Kevin. Other than the stall info, wing loading is pretty much the same as blade loading in helicopters. I guess that is why the Blackhawk is so stable in the rear. The tailrotor produces something like 10% of the total lifting force for a given gross weight. That is a lot of lift for those...

My Modest Proposal to End Global Warming, Revitalize General Aviation, and End Our Dependence on Foreign Oil by C J Campbell[_1_]
Vast numbers of automobiles with 2 or 3 or more cars per household; long commutes of single drivers; horrible freeway congestion; urban sprawl; loss of farmland and wilderness resources; the decay of cities and the takeover of large areas of our cities by lawless gangs; obesity caused by...

Bothersome Phillips Head Screws by Larry Smith
Doing a little work on old Cessnas for fun these days and have to tell you I don't like Phillips head screws. The slightest corrosion and they stick and freeze. Then your Snap-On screwdriver (make sure it fits) wallows the head out, as you grunt and cuss. Then you have to pull out the old...

personal property tax on homebuilt aircraft by Stu Fields
Jim Weir: I believe that you made reference to an exemption from personal property tax assessment on the basis of less than 5 aircraft of a specific model being made? Can you provide a reference to the tax code where that is defined? (I hope that this applies to California??) Stu Fields...

Sealant for polyethylene fuel tank? by Rob Turk
I'm looking for a sealant or kit to seal brass NPT inserts into a polyethylene tank. This is a Kitfox header tank that has developed a leak at one of the inserts. I'm probably going to use Mogas that has ethanol additives. Any hints, tips, thoughts? Thanks, Rob

Mazda single rotor weight? by [email protected]
Atkins lists the weight of their single rotor "industrial" version of the Mazda 13B at 80 lbs and their marine version at 130. I've got most of a 13B apart on the shop floor with the idea of building a truncated version for aviation use but I'd like to know if the weights are anywhere near real...

Which plane for 5 small pax? by Adam Aulick
I have the opposite problem from the usual "four seats doesn't mean four pax" problem -- I'm looking for an aircraft with typical four-place load (and price) to carry five small passengers and minimal baggage. What aircraft are out there on the used market (including hombuilts!) which can safely,...

4130 can't be OA welded? by wright1902glider
While browsing a bit more of that "good 'ole internet wizdom", I ran accross this page: http://www.ihpva.org/com/PracticalInnovations/materials.html Its a human-powered vehicle website, but on this page, the author seems to think that 4130 cro-mo steel can't be welded with an oxy- acetylene...

1 Fatal ...r.a.h or r.a.p? by Montblack
I sometimes cut-n-paste crash victim's names into Google.groups.rec.aviation to see if that person has ever posted here. Too ghoulish? One person's name, about 6 years ago, came up. IIRC, his family was in the plane. With the spate of recent crashes it got me wondering, again: People here...

Why don't wings have dimples? by Dancing Fingers
Hi all, I always wanted to build my own airplane but the time and money has eluded me. So I've decided to design and build my own recumbent trike, with farings. This brings me to my question, if golf balls have dimples, to help them sail further, why don't wings -- especially for STOL aircraft? ...

A-65 Continental 100 Octane Valves: HELP! by Scott
Ok gurus, Last Fall, I developed trouble in one cylinder (leakage past the exhaust valve as evidenced by hissing sound coming out exhaust stack when pulling the engine through). It only appears to be one cylinder, but I thought now would be a good time to pull all four and convert to 100 Octane...
