Unusual Distractions by
Ol Shy & Bashful
Years back I was doing FAR 91 corporate flying with a Merlin IIB out
of SNA. I had a trip for my boss down to his house in Cabo San Lucas.
There was one of many charity fishing tournaments happening that he
participated in, and one of the guys asked him if he could add some
color to this particular...

Pilot deviations and a new FAA reality by
Chip Jones
OK pilots, try this one on for size. As you likely know, there is a wide
and growing rift between the career FAA bureaucrats (aka FAA Management) who
run the monstrosity called the federal Air Traffic Organization, and the
career FAA air traffic controllers who make that monstrosity work in the...

Air sickness by
Amine
Does motion sickness fade away with experience? How many of you
seasoned pilots had/still have serious issues with recurrent nausea?
(Assuming of course an otherwise good health.)

boycott united forever by

My dad worked for 24 years at UAL-PDX. Laid him off in his 24th year, a
year before he was eligible for full retirement. He was UAL-PDX employee
of the year a couple of times, received all kinds of awards and bonuses...he
received one award for not missing a day of work for something like...

Rudder for final runway alignment (?) by
Mxsmanic
Is it cheating/advisable/forbidden/useless to use the rudder alone to
accomplish the very last seconds of runway alignment on landing? As I
approach the landing point it becomes very difficult to turn in the
usual way just to improve alignment. Using rudder alone can line me
up perfectly right...

VOR approach SMO by
Robert M. Gary
The other day I shot the VOR approach into SMO for the first time in
low actual. I've often looked at that approach as one of the most
difficult I've seen published so it was interesting to actually try
it. The weather was 008OVC with something like 3sm HZ. I touched down
about 3/4 down the runway...

How often do you have to go around? by
Mxsmanic
In simulation, the simulated ATC seems to be very inefficient at
spacing aircraft, because practically every fifth aircraft on landing
is told to go around. In fact, if you are told to follow someone in
for a landing, you can take for granted that he won't clear the runway
in time and you'll be...

I don't understand the point of the story. It's a really bad idea to do what
he did. Even he admits it. So why is it being featured? It's only going to
encourage other pilots to make the...

Excellent TV Piece on GA by
Jay Honeck
http://www.kgan.com/csArticles/articles/000055/005537.htm
Amazing! This Cedar Rapids, Iowa TV station did a 2-part piece on
learning to fly -- and did a wonderful job!
The CFI in both segments, Tim Bush, is outstanding. He's a real
pistol, locally, with a zillion ideas for growing GA, and...

Raptor vs Eagle by
Jay Honeck
Did anyone else catch the History Channel's "Modern Marvels: The F/A 22
Raptor" last night?
What an amazing plane. The Air Force did a head-to-head combat exercise,
one Raptor versus EIGHT F-15 Eagles. The Eagle pilots were all experienced
combat pilots, all with time in the Raptor as well -- so...

New Garmin 396 by
[email protected]
So... just got an email from Sportys about the new Garmin GPSMAP 396.
It looks pretty cool! A handheld with weather and terrain!
Also interesting are the interface features to get TIS from a GTX330
and to be able to change channels on an SL30. This could make the 396
an interesting cheapie option...

I was flying out of VGT last month (North Las Vegas) heading back to
SLC in an Aztec after a great round of Golf. After getting VFR
clearance from ground to MMM (Mormon Mesa Vortac) which is ENE of
Vegas. Cleared for takeoff and given a heading from the tower, then
handed off to Nellis aproach. ...

OT - Best Business Credit Card? by
Jay Honeck
We've had a company VISA card for many years. It has no annual fees, we
never pay interest -- but we also don't "get" anything out of using it,
either. In the past we've bumped up against the credit limit during the
month, and the company (now called "Chase") has been very slow to increase

Question: "Overhead Entry to Downwind?" by
Harry Shin
Hi Guys,
My father and I were returning to Petaluma (O69), called in on the 45 to
downwind and were just about to turn downwind when a flight of three
experimentals called in that they were set up for their "overhead entry".
They were flying above pattern altitude on the runway heading, proceeded...

Worst weather, ever... by
Jay Honeck
Usually winter is my favorite time of year to fly. The air is cold and
crisp, the visibility is CAVU, and the landscape has its own stark beauty.
Not this year. Mary and I have not flown in weeks -- not even the pattern --
a new record for us. The weather has simply been appalling, with...
