Changes to USA Nationals System by
Tim Taylor
It is time for a major overhaul of the US Nationals system. With time
constraints and cost it is making the single national approach
outdated. We have discussed the idea of super regionals or multiple
nationals. I think it is time to seriously look at these
alternatives. We have to recognize...

Help calculating Speed To Fly for headwind and tailwind by
Tim Taylor
I am looking for the equations to determine the speed to fly for a
headwind or tailwind. I can calculate the the speed to fly for no
wind based on the polar from Equation V (Page 106, 1988 US Version) in
Reichmann. He gives a graphical method to determine the speeds for a
headwind or tailwind but...

Nice wave flights in Utah on Saturday by
Tim Taylor
There were several long wave flights in Utah on Saturday. Dan Wrobel
posted a flight of more than 700K in a Ventus B 16.6 to OLC and York
Zentner flew over 1000K in LM (ASG-29) but appears to have had a
logger failure. His spot trace will be around for a few...

Spot Gen3? by
Tim Taylor
Tracking down to 2.5 minutes. Prices for the Gen3 and is there extra
cost for the better tracking? Couldn't find anything on the website.
From SPOT:
Having initiated over 2,300 rescues around the world, SPOT is
solidifying its place as a leader in satellite communication

PowerFLARM Files not valid with OLC by
Tim Taylor
I have had two flights in a row come back with Purple Validation rather than green. So far no explanation from the OLC guys why this is happening.
Very odd thing is that OLC is changing my file names each time they are uploaded.
Tonight I uploaded 36GG8E1.igc and the OLC site renames the file...

Wave in Utah on September 30th by
Tim Taylor
Amazing wave yesterday, the best defined I have ever seen running for several hundred miles north and south. I had to work and had to just look at it from the ground.
Several gliders flew out of Morgan. 2KA covered 600 km with a launch after 3 pm at 164 kph (102 mph). Hopefully we will get more...

Help needed with communication between a Colibri and IPAQ by
Tim Taylor
I need help with getting a Colibri logger to communicate with an IPAQ.
I can get the Colibri to send data to the IPAQ to work with WinPilot
and I can get WinPilot to send a declaration to the Colibri, but I can

Colibri to the...

SPOT Possibilities by
Tim Taylor
Now that my SPOT unit has arrived and I got to fly with it yesterday,
I have some thoughts.
1. Do we have any good contacts with the company? I think some
modifications could be very useful for the soaring community. The
recent Australian Gran Prix was nice, but track every 2 to 3 minutes
would...

Godspeed Bill Bartell by

Many of us received word this morning that Bill is missing and
presumed dead in a body surfing accident in Mexico (Thanks, Roy). Was
not sure how it would affect me, but I have been pretty subdued all
day. Hard to think Bill won't be there to call when I need advice on
flying the Ventus and which...

Relief Tube Housing - Unsafe by
Tim Taylor
I pulled the seat pan in my Ventus 2 for the first time to find the
relief tube housing to be a 10 inch long sharp ended aluminum tube
epoxied to the bottom of the fuselage. Needless to say if you have
one of these in your glider I encourage you to get rid of it ASAP. I
would hate to see what...
