The Cherokee Kids by
Tony[_5_]
Well after the vintage glider meet in Wichita last month Leah got the
bug, and Dave Schuur convinced her that she should buy a glider.
Specifically, Dave's old Cherokee II that was again up for sale. Dave
was nice enough to deliver it out to Wichita for us, today. Leah fits
great!
Pictures he...

Public Dyneema failure by
Tony[_5_]
It will be interesting if we ever hear what was the cause of the failure of the Dyneema rope failure at the NASCAR race in Charlotte on Sunday. Apparently the rope that drives suspended TV camera across the track was Dyneema. It failed somehow, dropping into the stands, over the fence, and across...

Flying the Sparrowhawk by
Tony[_5_]
Hello RAS,
As some of you know I had a great adventure in August, thanks to Greg Cole's offer to fly his Sparrowhawk at the 13.5 Meter Super Regionals in Moriarty, NM. I wrote up a really long report on the experience for my clubs newsletter and have reprinted it on my SSA Member Blog. You can...

Cherokee Kid Rides Again by
Tony[_5_]
It's been way too long since I went soaring in the Cherokee. I had it out last year in September for our vintage rally but didn't get a chance to fly it myself as it was flown by friends visiting from out of town.
This year I spent most of the season distracted from flying the Cherokee since I was...

Thank You Rules Committee by
Tony[_5_]
I thought I was aware of all the changes being made for 2013 but one slipped past me. I just realized that the rules now say that any logger that makes a Blue V on the OLC is acceptable for regional contest. Awesome!

I just saw this on the SSA's website. After April 14 we no longer
need to be carrying data plate exemption papers. High Five to whoever
was able to make this happen!

Pre Takeoff Checklists by
Tony[_5_]
Seems to me that it's been a while since we had a good brouhaha over
pretakeoff checklists. Most of use use either ABBCCCDDE (or is it
AABBCCDDE? Or ABBBCCCCDDEEFG?) or CBSIFTCB or some other variant. I'm
curious what you use and WHY? What have you added or subtracted to
the "base" checklist to...

Legends of Flight IMAX by
Tony[_5_]
Has anyone else seen it? Has a nice sequence of an ASW-24 in the
mountains. I was watching on an IMAX Dome which sort of distorted the
image so I'm not sure if it was CGI or not, although I suspect it
was.
The film was about the 787 and featured Boeings chief test pilot. It
sort of was a basic...

FAI Ultralight Definition by
Tony[_5_]
Curious,
Sporting Code 3 defines the Ultralight Class as a take off weight of
less than 220 kg, or 485 lbs. Is this maximum allowed takeoff weigth
or the actual weight of the glider for that flight?

to spend winters sanding and spraying polyurethane. more is better of

looking for a wheel brake solution by
Tony[_5_]
Hi everyone, I've been slowly working away on Leah's Cherokee II and
need to come up with a wheel brake solution. Previously it had a
4.10x3.5 tire. The axle diameter is 5/8".
The Cherokee II, per plans, has a piece of aluminum that gets pulled
down over the tire. This is the way my Cherokee II...

Minnesota Downwind Dash! by

Barry Yeager and Dick Andrews launched this morning at 10 AM (10 AM!!!) from Fairbault. They are about to cross I-80 in Iowa as of 12:30. They are flying Barry's Arcus M. My understanding is the goal is 750km just east of St Louis which ought to be good for a multiplace distance to declared goal...
