A different lamp base by Blanche Cohen
Had to replace the cast iron/steel/whatever cylinder (Piper part 65319) on my cherokee a couple years ago because of a crack (which later was an AD, but my A&P caught it early). The shop presented it to me with the comment "it'll make a *great* lamp base!". Well, not for me. I don't think any of...

Potential Class B Bust by Charlie45
Yesterday I was out flying Acro with my instructor and allegedly we violated Class B airspace. We were doing three series sequences at 3000 and the Class B floor where we were was at 4000. The seqeunce consisted of a "Sharks Tooth" to an "Immelman" followed by a "Spin". Upon completion of the...

Back in the saddle - flying again! by GEG
ALRIGHT! That felt good! After a 2 year hiatus, I'm back in the saddle again! I was so mentally ready! Although I've only flown 4 times (last year once for a 20-minute hop in a Piper Tri-Pacer tail dragger on a grass strip), I hit the rectangular patterns, maintained altitude on turns, hit my...

how to get started as AC broker? by Bill
(Looking for serious replies please...) I am a ATP pilot with a general aviation background, and am growing tired of the insecurity of the (no matter where you work) "pro pilot job." Pagers, on call, no real vacations, etc, etc. Another friend of mine, also an ATP, feels the same way. However...

GA Life near Manhattan by Marty Ross
I'll be moving to Manhattan from Los Angeles (does it get any more extreme?) next month. Any advice or relevant anecdotes out there to help me gather some leads about continuing my flying hobby from there? I've been renting (in L.A.) - usually from the FBO where I did my training. I'm IFR rated...

Destruction due to turbulence when below Va - how? by Roger Long
It's not complete protection, it just loads the odds a bit more in your favor. The aircraft is as likely to be broken by a panicked response by the pilot or a botched attempt to recover from an unusual attitude and being at Va will reduce that probability significantly. -- Roger Long

Ground effect effectiveness by Tony
I haven't found a decent reference for this -- can anyone help? Consider a clean low speed airplane -- maybe one of the kit built ones. Does anyone have some quantitative measure of how much drag is reduced if the airplane is flown say half or quarter of a wingspan above the ocean? Would we be...

Any W&B calculators that work in 640x480 on HP4700 PDA? by Jose
I am after a simple W&B calculator for a PDA, with a few E6B calculations (density altitude, say) but nothing else. Try CoPilot, for the palm. It does more than just w&b, but you don't have to use it. IT is outstandingly excellent though. Jose -- "Never trust anything that can think for...

I was looking at the FAA N-number database. Everything seems to have a mode S code, even a friend's balloon that doesn't have a transponder. Can anybody explain that?

Small aircraft exhaust silencer manufacturers? by Seppo Sipilä
Hello all, I'm trying to find manufacturers of exhaust silencers for typical Continental and Lycoming small-aircraft engines. I know of Gomolzig, are there others? I'm looking for officially approved silencers, preferrably such that they can be installed to the original exhaust manifold. S.

AVIATIONTOOLBOX: automatic route selection by Kyler Laird
I've been asked to help write some code to assist in flight planning by choosing routes. I have just enough Computer Science and IFR background to make me dangerous. I said that I'd donate my effort if it results in Free code the community can use. So we're making this a community...

Idle question about aircraft in movies by Patty Winter
Although I'm not a pilot, I find it fun to jot down the tail numbers of airplanes I see in movies and TV shows, then look them up to see what kinds of planes they are and where they're based. (Or at least, where their owners are based. Airplanes are notoriously peripatetic. ;-)) Sometimes the...

Embraer seating by marc
Have a trip coming up via Continental Express on an Embraer RJ135. Haven't seen one. From a seating chart online, it looks like the front two seats on the right side will have more leg room. I'm 6' 5" and dread the cramped seating. It also look like the seats in front of the over wing emergency...
