Permit to use aircraft radio frequencies on ground by C. J. Clegg
We have a small consulting company that owns an airplane that is used for business trips. From time to time it would be useful to be able to contact the airplane from our office which is not located on any airport. What do we need to do to get authorization to install an aircraft band radio at...

Heard on the radio by Roy Smith
This was a funny one I overheard today, heading back into HPN. Some guy checks in with NY Approach. The controller says, "It says here in the remarks that you've got a dog aboard". Aircraft: That's right ATC: Why would I want to know that? Aircraft: It means I can't handle a descent faster...

private plane noise by beaudoin
Why did you buy near an airport? Or wasn't it there when you bought the house?

Scattering Ashes by Chris Matras
I have a co-worker who's father just passed away. He'd like his ashes scattered over his home town. I've read a few horror stories in flying magazine. Does anyone have any experience with this? I have a Mooney and am a little concerned about stuff getting blown back in, or all over the wings. ...

Plane with no stall warning device? by Roy Smith
Researching a question from a club member, I read in the FAR's: §**23.207 *Stall warning. (b) The stall warning may be furnished either through the inherent aerodynamic qualities of the airplane or by a device that will give clearly distinguishable indications under expected conditions of...

Rent plane from another private pilot? by GEG
I'm about 15 flight hours along in flight training. My buddy is about 30 hours along and rounding the bend. He's going to buy a plane - just part of his overall goal. So here's a question: (Let's assume I get a my PPL and checkout in the plane and everything is cool .. .)

Do you allow landings on short fields? by Roy Smith
My club recently had an airplane damaged in an overrun on a 2200 foot runway. This is the third such incident in the last 5 or so years (two of which resulted in serious aircraft damage, but fortunately no injuries). We're considering tightening up our rules about short runways. One possibility...

Good flying fiction? by Chris Wells
I've been looking for some good flying stories. A friend recommended "The Reluctant Messiah", which I've yet to find. Can someone recommend more, preferably written by a pilot & for pilots?

Early morning hotel-to-airport by Bob Fry
A friend and I are planning on flying our Ercoupes from California to Oshkosh. First long trip for both of us. Based on just about everyone's advice, we want to leave each day as early as possible (takeoff around 6:00 am), fly until noon or so, and then park for the rest of the day. This schedule...

FAA PPL night flight requirement - does it have to be DUAL? by Gary G
This might be nitpicky, but nothing in the AIM is a "requirement". Technically the AIM is not the law, the FAR is. Nonetheless, the AIM is incredibly important - I know. It seems subtle, doesn't it?

ATC Tape by Steffen Braasch
Good Morning, perhaps somebody can help my here. I´m looking for the ATC sound-file of the 1982 British Airways All Engine Flame Out Incident . Especially the Mayday call. I could use that very good for a small, non commercial presentation in my classroom.

Collings Foundation Bombers by Dale
I've pasted in a copy of the email I received from the Collings Foundation. If you have a moment to send an email/comment to the addresses noted it would be worthwhile. I spent two years flying the B-24 and B-17 and truly believe that having these airplanes on tour is a great way to honor the...

Only official instrument approaches authorised under FAR? by Roy Smith

Biplane wing dihedral by vincent p. norris
Friend of mine said at lunch today that the upper wings of biplanes have no dihedral. Hementioned specificlaly the Stearman PT-17. I believe he was mistaken. I know the Sopwith Camel upper wing was flat but I think the PT-17 and most other biplanes have dihedral in both wings. Any expert...

A-330 ailerons by M
I was sitting on a Northwest Airbus A-330 a few Sunday's ago at Tokyo Narita airport waiting for everybody to board on the flight back to Seattle, when I noticed something strange with the ailerons. Both ailerons were at their full downward deflection at about 30 degrees. Things like this can...

Airport security. by Roy Smith
I had an interesting experience yesterday. When I drove into the airport (White Plains, HPN), there was a checkpoint set up on the access road. It looked semi-permanent; a drive-through pavillion (sort of a large-tent open at both ends) with flood lights installed inside. It was manned by an...

Ancient VOR Transmitter ?? by [email protected]
I recently received this large single-frequency transmitter from an elderly gentleman who used to be a ham radio operator. I have not been able to pin down exactly what it is. Some folks have given the opinion that it may be an old VOR transmitter. I'm wondering if someone can identify it? Give...
