"Lawn Chair, Two O'Clock, One Mile..." by quietguy
John Deakin included this link in his latest "Pelican's Perch" column on AvWeb.com: http://home.earthlink.net/~quade/lawnchair.html Despite the downbeat ending I find it inspirational: chase that dream...

CHARTER: rec.aviation.piloting by Larry Dighera
The "founder" of this rec.aviation.piloting usenet newsgroup, Jeoff Peck, seems to have discontinued periodically posting its charter. In the hope that knowledge of the charter will improve the newsgroup's ever declining signal-to-noise ratio, I post it he From: Geoff Peck...

The Garmin 496...a teenager's review by Jay Honeck
Now that my son is taking flight lessons, I'm letting him fly in (Read: Mary is relinquishing) the front seat more often. This plants him squarely in front of our panel-docked Garmin 496, the latest-and- greatest portable GPS from Garmin. We've flown behind this unit since OSH '06, and he has...

Wichita Airspace Question and overlapping airspace by Owen[_4_]
So, Wichita, Kansas seems to be blessed with a lot of airports and the sectional chart looks pretty busy. To the east of Wichita Mid Continent (ICT), there is Col. Jabara (towerless), Beech Factory (private field w/ tower), McConnell AFB, etc. McConnel's Class D just grazes Beech's towered...

Best place to live and fly? by Jay Honeck
I vote for Iowa City! This just in: "'Kiplinger's Personal Finance' ranked Iowa City 10th in its top 50 'Smart Places to Live' list. The rankings are based on cost of living, homes, crime, health care, climate, environment and education." :-) --

Denver Terminal Area Chart Question - BVR vor/dme by Robert Easton
Does anybody know why on the Denver Terminal Area Chart, the Byers (BVR 113.5) vor/dme facility is charted without the compass ring that are on most vortacs? It's the only one I've seen charted like this. Byers is located 33NM on the 090 radial of DVV (the Denver International Vortac). Thanks,...

Turbulence and airspeed by Jay Honeck
Mary and I flew to West Bend, Wisconsin (KETB) today. It was supposed to be CAVU all day, except along the Lake Michigan shoreline (where they were getting stomped with lake-effect snows all day), but, of course, the forecast was just a bit off, as it often is in winter. From Dubuque (DBQ) to...

A beautiful little plane by Mark
http://www.myplane.com/ad/1067#%20self And the price is right too. Only problem is- It's a tiny little bird. I've been told that anyone over 6' or 175lbs, don't bother. Myself, 6'3", 199lbs. sigh

insurance for Sport Pilots! by Cub Driver
I always figured that the test on the new Sport Pilot rules would be how the new category would be treated by insurance companies. After all, if I can't get insurance, I can't rent the Cub! Here's the answer, which also indirectly addresses the question of how much safety we're giving up by...

Doubts raised in jet crash by Dave Butler
A neighbor sent me this article about a 1967 crash near Hendersonville, NC. The controlling ATC was the Asheville TRACON. This predates the online NTSB accident archive, but I once had a hardcopy of the accident investigation. I'll look for it. I found the original online at...

Practicing SFLs with a constant speed prop - how? by Ed
I'm fairly new to GA after a 19 year break flying jets. I routinely fly a single engine experimental with a constant speed prop mounted on a Lycoming IO-360. 2 QUESTIONS: 1. What's the proper setup to simulate the way the plane would glide in case of an engine failure? I'm looking for pitch...

Yikes, it's been a week since I headed down to Palm Springs for a one day, one (planned) overnight stay for the '06 AOPA Expo. The plan was to head down early Friday, meet JayB from AZ, spend the day attending a few seminars, and looking at/talking about airplanes. It also turns out that Palm...

Collins Pro Line vs Garmin G1000 by Charles Talleyrand
I notice that the Citation CJ1s have Collins Pro Line and the Citation Mustangs have Garmin 1000s. Does the Pro Line have any significant advantages over the Garmin 1000? Which might be easier for the single pilot to learn? -Just Curious -Charles Talleyrand

Are sectional paths correct across "long" distances? by vincent p. norris
No. Straight lines on Lambert Conformal maps are not great circles. It's my understanding that the Lambert Conformal is better than any other flat surface at representing the curved surface of the earth in such a way that a straight line on the chart comes very close to being a Great...
