padding in Cobra trailer by
BobWa43
The carpet in my Cobra trailer is shedding badly. I would like to replace or cover it. Open to any ideas on how to remove the old carpet or can you just put some new material on top of the old? What material would be best? Soft felt, hard felt, carpet?

Ventus 2c gas spring by
BobWa43
Does anyone have experience replacing the gas spring that supports the instrument panel in the Ventus2c? Any information on the specifications of the spring any difficulties encountered in replacing it will be greatly appreciated.

gel coat by
BobWa43
Is gel coat crazing purely a cosmetic problem or does it pose a threat to the structural integity of the underlying fiberglass? I realize this is a controbersial issue but I would really like to hear the current opinions of members with experience refinishing gel coated gliders.

Attitudes & Reality by

A post from another thread is timely - this being the start of the most active
part of the U.S. soaring season. Excerpted from another thread:
Beginning of Excerpt...
"There's a personality type that won't be convinced. I stopped to talk to a
pilot who was launching on a wave day at Minden....

Looking for A-14 (or similar) - Thread Drifting... by
BobW
Warning!!! Intentional experiment of trying to intentionally 'drift a thread'
by 'cold-starting' an entirely new, similarly-named, one without simply
renaming one of the posts from the original one (which seems to cause some
RASidents heartburn). Don't like today's result? Whine to the Ruler of...

Kawa Webinar - Thanks Everyone!!! (Plus a few thoughts...) by
BobW
Having just watched (36 hours after the fact) the SSA/Sebastian Kawa webinar
of the (U.S.) evening of Feb. 5, 2019 (link that worked for me below), am
"feeling the need" (ha ha!) to:
1) thank everyone involved - the (many) organizers; Sebastian Kawa; the
moderators; the...

Wolf Lemke Obituary by
BobW
A first-generation great has passed. I did not know Mr. Lemke, but from
multiple sources whose opinions I respect, every one of them - unsolicited by
me - volunteered he was not only a (quietly) superb, multi-talented, sailplane
designer, but - far more important in the grand human scheme of...

Wintertime and navigation... by
BobW
So it's wintertime in the northern hemisphere (short days/long nights), and on
a recent thread it's (yet again) been implied out how crucial GPS is to
routine navigation (you're doomed without it), and part of
increasingly-geezeristic me gazes back fondly upon those forever-vanished days
when...

Does How a (Sailplane) Pilot Thinks, Matter? by
BobW
Thought I'd start a new thread, kinda-sorta forked off one "festering" in "The
Boy Who Flew With Condors" thread (which I re-watched last night for the first
time in decades; cool!)...
On the card is a Grudge Match between two (irreconcilable?) schools of

Crunch(es) Alert (USA)... by
BobW
The soaring season is working its way north; a quick skim of the FAA Prelims
(4/14/12 AM) after several days of absence yielded 2 single-seat notices
entered 4/13/12. Thankfully, apparently no fatalities.
Assuming 100% entry accuracy (major assumption), this one *may* eventually
make the NTSB...

Crunch Alert (USA) - hugely serious but (apparently) non-fatal by
BobW
Having once 'felt the need' myself, this one undoubtedly has a compelling
story; it will definitely make its way into the NTSB database.
Thank goodness the pilot is (reportedly) OK. SSA member; diamond badge; 2-time
3rd place finisher in Region 9 Regional.
If it happens it must be possible....

2nd-Guessing Accidents (aka Seeking Personal Insight) by
BobW
So far, the USA's 2012 northern spring appears to be shaping up to be a
"typical soaring season" in accident terms. In my view, that's not a good
thing. Why? Summary-to-date follows...

Wide-ranging Safety Discussion...? by
BobW
I might be wrong, but my sense is that now in this soaring season, and
considering *only* quantity of gliders "substantially damaged" or worse, few
semi-regular, US-based, RAS readers would not agree this U.S. season is -
statistical pedantry aside - already distinctly...

OFL Gone Bad? by
BobW
From today's FAA Preliminary Accident/Incident Report...
Were it not for the "Damage: Substantial" I'd be wondering if this wasn't
simply a routine OFL; these sometimes appear, simply because if for any reason
the FAA is notified in such cases, someone within the FAA necessarily has to
file a...

Most U.S. glider pilots know of Tom Knauff, creator and long-time proprietor
