Anyone had fuel tank air vent icing up? by Bill
It's a problem in Bonanzas & Barons. Heated fuel vents are an option on some Barons. You can tell it's happening by noting the fuel gauges. They go UP! The bladder sucks up from the tank and deflects the outbound level sender when the vents are blocked. You need a plan to be on the ground.

Strategy for icing due to freezing rain by Bill
The advice to climb is based on the idea that it's warmer above, which is an interesting theory. You could die getting up to where it's warmer. You should do an immediate 180 and get out of there. During your preflight wx brief, you need to have your radar turned on HIGH to any hint that there...

Garmin 196 & obstacle database. by max
Has anyone else noticed that the new v4.0 software for the Garmin 196 adds "support for Obstacle database"? Does anyone know what this means? Sounds like a potentially valuable upgrade to part of my existing IFR flight bag. Hmmm...

Low battery voltage level by markp
Hi All, I'm looking for recommendations for a low battery warning voltage level. I was going to use 12.8V - is this liable to be triggered by noise/dips in the bus voltage? My guess is when heaters or motors kick in there could be a momentary drop due to high current that could trigger my low...

Let's run the FAA like the airlines! by JerryLewis
The New and Enlightened Federal Aviation Administration of the Bush Administration has stated on many occasions they want to run more like a "Business" and be more receptive to the airlines and the airline business model. Really? OK IF AIRLINES SOLD PAINT Customer: Hi. How much is your...

Extra Hold Depicted on Plate? by Mitty
We are getting a brand new ILS 26 at KANE and I just downloaded the plate. The miss is what I expected to see and is a hold at the GEP "Gopher" VOR a few miles to the west. But there is also a hold depicted at the PNM NDB, which is a long ways away. That hold is not mentioned on the plate. I...

ASA On Top 9? by Hamish Reid
I realise it's only been released for a few days, but as I'm in the market for a non-MS sim, and as I have an older version that works just fine but needs updating so it can do real GPS, etc., does anyone have anything to say one way or another about ASA's new On Top 9? Thanks, Hamish

Puget Sound -- Eugene, OR Routing Q by [email protected]
Last weekend I flew IFR Paine to Eugene. I filed V23, but was cleared to the west along OLM V165 UBG V495 CVO EUG. Similar routing for the return flight. I asked each controller (except Seattle Approach) for vectors EUG direct when able, but each controller said they needed to keep me on the...

GDL 49/EchoFlight Reception by O. Sami Saydjari
I recently installed a Garmin GDL 49 to receive weather reports from satellite (Echoflight subscription). I was disappointed that we only were in contact with the satellite for 60% of the time. In particular, we were not able to get reports just as we needed them...as we were approaching IFR...

New school in Seattle area by Baha
I just wanted to inform Seattle area pilots about a new school that started in Renton Municipal Airport. We are AcuWings, a family owned business. The reason we started the school is because we felt the void in Renton Airport for an alternative outfit. We currently have a Piper Tomahawk that is a...

FAA going to crap by BuzzBoy
I got a good friend who works for the FAA at a major airport. He told me the experienced controllers and technicians are retiring and leaving by the dozens and the only thing they are hiring are black females and people who are basically unqualified and stupid. Now that's scary. I never thought the...
