Bad Week for Airbus by Phil
On top of last week's A340 incident, now an A330 experienced a sudden depressurization on a shakedown flight. Among the injuries to passengers were spinal injuries. Sounds like the pilot may have abruptly dived the aircraft while some passengers were still standing in the aisle. Or would people...

Why a triplane? by Ricky
I am not an expert on aerodynamics so I do not know much about the pros & cons of a monoplane vs. a biplane or triplane. I've a re-kindled interest in the Red Baron recently and was looking at a Fokker Triplane replica picts & videos and doing a bit of reading about it's flying characteristics. I...

Is the YouTube video legit. by Greg Hall
This guy is kitesailing and a 737 comes by and his kite snags on the empennage. Off he goes into the wild blue yonder. Is this video a hoax? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNQkIjxdSwg -- Gregory Hall

Sold out by IFR by Mike Rapoport
I used to subscribe to IFR until I realized that they offered a much better rate to new subscribers than to existing ones. After realizing this, my four year old decided to subscribe :-). Today he recieved a solicitation from another aviation magazine. Obviously they sold his (and my) name...

returning to flying after 29 years by Qzectb
I got my pilot license in 1978 when I was 20, continued flying into 1979 accumulating a total of 70 hours, and then stopped when I became a university student and had neither money nor time. But I've been longing to get back into it all this time, and yesterday, my wife totally surprised me for my...

12 dead this weekend from GA crashes by Skylune
6 in South Carolina, 3 in Wisconsin, 3 in Florida (another Cirrus). A current AOPA focus is to make sure flying remains affordable for owners of "tired iron." They awarded a 1974 plane to a lucky winner in Colorado. On this web page a writer laments that GA planes don't have locking gas caps.

Lost stories here by Danny Deger
Post your lost story here, so we can all laugh at them. My first one is "The lake that shouldn't be there". I was flying from north of the Dallas/Fort Worth area to my home port of Luck Field which is south of Fort Worth. No radios of any type in my little Taylorcraft. All was well. A nice...

New Orleans Lakefront Airport by Dan Luke
CNN video: NEW looks bad; partially under water. Heavy damage to most buildings, particularly the large Millionaire FBO west of 18/36. Wonder how long it will be before we make the $100 muffaletta trip to Lakefront again--if indeed we ever do? -- Dan C172RG at BFM

FAA to be phasing out "position and hold" in the US by Peter R.
I just received an email from my FBO, who received word from ATC at our class C airport, that the FAA is phasing out the "position and hold" instruction "to try to curb the runway incursions and controller errors." At my home base, which is a class C airport in Syracuse, NY, the elimination of...

Online source for POH by Jim
I'm looking for a good online source for POH's for my students. I want them to purchase a POH for the plane they fly so they have their own copy. Any leads, links or help is appreciated. Google doesn't give me many leads. -- Jim Burns III CFI Remove "nospam" to reply

They're like the energizer bunny... by Jay Honeck
Depression and despair rule the roost tonight in Iowa City. After all the meetings attended, and all the editorials rebutted, and all the interviews granted, and all the letters written -- our City Council called a sudden, surprise joint meeting with our Airport Commission tonight, and announced...

Locate airports by radius from a given airport by Matt Whiting
Does anyone know of a good way to locate airports that are 200 miles or more from a given airport? I realize a large planning chart with a circle drawn would be easy, but I don't have one of those handy. I need to plan a 200 mile cross country for my commercial day/night long cross country and...

Enola Gay Damaged at Air & Space Museum Opening by Jay Honeck
I'm surprised no one has brought up this travesty. For those who don't know, the Enola Gay -- beautifully refurbished and now on display at the new Udvar-Hazy facility of the National Air & Space Museum -- was damaged by some nut case from Ohio who threw something at the plane and dented it during...

Knowing when you are overflying something by Mxsmanic
How do you know when you are exactly overflying a specific spot on the ground? It's it just a matter of knowing your particular aircraft, or are there tricks that can help to determine this? I know you can look off the tip of your wing to see if you're abeam something (such as a runway), but how...

Slavery In Aviation by Bob Dole
If the place where I work is telling me to work hour's for free, what should I do ? I am worried that working for free is illegal, immoral, unethical, and unprofessional, and I am also worried that it exposes me to the possibility of an IRS audit as I could be accused of getting paid "under the...

T-hangar's bi-fold door: Convert to a motorized opening door? by Peter R.
Here's a silly question: Is there any way to convert a t-hangar's manually opening bi-fold door to a motorized one? I just rented a t-hangar that uses a circular chain hanging off a large pulley near the top of the hangar to control the door. The chain must be pulled thirty to forty times to...
