Any LAK 17B FES owners out there?

The mini-LAK is a FAI 13.5m class glider - so very different from the 15/18m LAK 17.

Js3 jet catastrophic failure.

Dave - those statistics are from 2008 so before jets became popular. I think jets will eliminate many of the problems encountered with traditional systems, but the e-systems may eliminate them...

Sailplane Canopy

For older gliders - a canopy replacement can approach half of the total glider value or more. So more cost effective canopies are then required.

What magic do the JS3 and Ventus 3 have that the ASG-29 Does not?

The JS3 in 18m configuration smashed the 1250km FAI triangle record earlier this year. Many days in the latest round of the World's had the 18m (V3 and JS3) achieving speeds higher than the Open...

Hosin 2018-2 pilots team flying with vastly different gliders !

Some days the highest 18m Class speeds are higher than the highest Open Class speeds - even on the days when the tasks are longer.

Nano 4 vs Colibri X ?

I have been flying with a Nano 4 for the last couple of months. Impressive little unit with a very clear bright display. It has made my LX5000/PDA set-up virtually unecessary because the final glide...

Round vs Square E-Chute

I was looking at a friend's round emergency chute over the weekend which was open for inspection - no toggles. It also had no quick release clips to release the chute from the harness - so being...

Buy Glider without looking

I purchased my LAK 12 from a neighbouring country (Botswana) in 2003. It is the only one in Africa so I had never even seen a LAK 12 at that point (or any LAK for that matter). I paid a third of the...

Using a Telsa or other power train to make the ultimate winch.

SGS 2-33? Elon? Noooo - at least something sexy and carbon. And being an African-American, show him the latest gliders from Africa to really get him excited.

Average time to solo a student

The launch method has an impact. The longer flights associated with aerotow will probably mean a lower number of flights needed than with winch launching - but may mean longer actual flight time.

Reducing collision hazard at contests

Oh yes Dave it would change pilot behaviour. Nobody would turn up for the competition. That will certainly eliminate any chance of collision.

Club Class gliders and Handicaps in Polish Nationals June 2018

For South African club class competitions, there are three handicap lists depending on the strength of the day. The strength (weak, intermediate or strong) and which list is applied depends on the...

Soaring not compatible with modern society?

Maybe gliding is targeting the wrong group when trying to expand the sport. All the effort is going at targeting young people. How may power pilots were taught first to fly gliders because it is...

Unfortunately - decisions that Trump makes do not just affect the US - but have a ripple effect on the rest of the world too. Just simple things like the sharp increase in oil price following his...

Moving Gliders

Move the wingtip forwards and backwards - if there is play between the wing and the fuselage then the glider has been pulled around by the tips. Longer wings more likely to develop play due to this....

Attitudes & Reality

Think of the audio vario - that quiet drone in the subconscious - till you 300m above the ground and it's all you focussed on and every little warble has your full attention.

Nano 4 from Craigy Aero

To get the latest beta software you need need to download it manually into the root directory. When it restarts - it will install. That is the version which includes the maps and thermal optimiser.

My first glider is a LAK-12. Same wing profile and performance as a Nimbus 2. Moved onto the LAK straight after flying ASK-23 and ASK-21 training gliders. Its a big, friendly dog - way more docile...
