True but if I were looking for an airplane and planned to replace the
engines right away, I would be focused on the part of the airplane that I
was keeping, not the part that I was going to replace as soon as I got it
home.

Sounds like the engines were toast when they bought the plane. I know
they plan on replacing/overhauling the engines, but this kind of stuff
is indicative of a REALLY bad condition plane.
