My mechanic said it's not worth taking it apart, but judging from your
results, I will try repacing the gasket.

what's wrong with it? Is the metal ok? Is the gasket there?

When I took off mine, it seemed pretty straightforward when I
took it apart and put a new (and expensive) gasket on it.
