the owner gets a tip he can always check their engine serial number in
person, but that's about it. Is the FBO or airport liable for
vandalism or theft from aircraft which are paying to base at their
tiedowns?
I guess the only way to do any type of trace would be through the NCIC
system that contains stolen item info. This was done by the police
department that investigated your case. Now I must think that the log
books were not with the engines when borrowed, so they're not worth
much, maybe only to homebuilders or as parts. They may be used as
factory cores, so it may help to contact the manufacturer with those
serial numbers.
