Last night I canceled a flight for a (for me) unique reason: the tower
was warning departing aircraft that FBO personnel had heard several
bursts of gunfire coinciding with departing flights passing over the
neighborhood off rwy 14.

I did a pre-purchase on a 182 a few years back that had had
a bullet hole on the horizontal stabilizer repaired. It'd lived most of its
life in southern CA. I wonder how many other 'shot-up' planes there
are out there?

Reid-Hillview, in San Jose, CA has problems every New Years Eve, with
the local Hispanic population liking to fire their guns into the air.
The cops take cover under viaducts from about 11:45 till 12:15AM, as the
place is like Baghdad on the opening night of Desert Storm.

I used to know people who collected bottles full of spent bullets on the
ramp. I also knew a few who had their planes holed from bullets dropping
out of the sky -- including one that penetrated the hangar roof and then
went on through the flap skins of a Cessna L-19.
