I got great customer service. I wanted to update the firmware on
my original Airmap. I bought a database update and they supplied
the firmware update for free - on a cartridge. While performing the
software upgrade, the unit died. It was out of warrantee, but I sent
it back to them. They fixed it and put the unit in the new case with
the new antenna and antenna connector. Anyway, it came back
rather deaf. I didn't really use it then for a while...I took it along with
me but it kept losing the signal, but I didn't use it as my primary
navigation so I wasn't too concerned.
After another year or so, I decided to see if my hunch was right. A
friend bought a 300 and I compared the signal. Mine was a good 5-6dB
down. After a discussion with Lowrance in the US, I sent the unit
back to them...it was now way out of warrantee. They found it was a
dry solder joint on the antenna connection. They fixed it, put it in
another new case and sent it back. They didn't charge me anything
and even paid the postage.
Anyway, my original Airmap, which I bought in 1997, still works fine.
The last bit of this happened a couple of years ago, so I guess I had
support a good 4-5 years from when I bought it.
