My favorite call was when I was inbound to NAS Fallon (NV) for an
airshow/open house. Tower called to let me know that I was, "number 3
behind a P-51 and a B-25. Keep your speed up." Followed by : "Blue
Angel Seven, you are number 4 behind a P-51, a B-25 and a Cessna".
I'm tempted to MP3 the radio conversations I taped from the Nellis 50th
anniversary airshow.
My engineer friend calls the audio "pilot porn." Wasn't too sophisticated:
I just held the scanner next to the video camera mike and tried to contain
my excitement. For example:
Chuck Yeager, to a flight of six P-51s: "Tally ho on the Messershmitt" and,
also
"Tally ho on the P-38", "...Zero", "Spitfire."
"Traffic to the northeast is a B-2..."
"Looking...
"It looks like a big bat..."
"Blackbird inbound from the north range..."
"Blackbird use left traffic, do not fly over the city. Do not exceed 250
knots."
As for the video, it's got the B-17 Nine-O-Nine being escorted first by
P-51s, followed by an F-117. In the same sequence, all in the air at the
same time, is a B-25, B-17, B-1, B-2, B-52, and IIRC, circling with them are
the P-51s, the 117s, a P-38.
BTW, when the sky cleared of all except the '51s, they were "jumped" by Migs
representing the Korean War. The Migs were in turn jumped by F-86s and the
lineage of air combat went on from there.
Still give me goose bumps thinking about it. I suppose I wouldn't have to
worry about copyright problems or anything like that if I dumped it to MP3.
