IIRC, the Piper POH uses a figure of 8 knots speed reduction if
(factory equipped) wheel pants are removed.


That's for the full-coverage wheel pants found on later model
Archers and Warriors (which Jay's modified pants emulate). The early
wheel pants covered only the somewhat aerodynamic part of the gear
(round wheel) and left all of the pointy bits hanging out in the
breeze. Those are good for 1 or 2 knots on a good day.
