Default FREE mapping tools for extreme SeeYou geeks

Hey Jonathan - Why don't you do the USA preprocessing and see if
Geunther and John can host the files for us unwashed masses ? And
for heavens sake get a better komputer.
See ya, Dave

Until someone generates and hosts the all the U.S. tiles for SeeYou
online, make your own:

I. Get sat photos from https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl

II. setfw.bat gdalinfo.exe gdalwarp.exe from OpenEV_FW_162.zip:
Re-project and crop. GeoTiff file input / various output formats. No
MrSid input (So get MrSid Viewer from www.lizardtech.com and export
geotifs). Nasty DOS interface. Source and binaries available online
(14.4 MB zip for dos package with the works)

http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/index.html (see downloads and major
doc entry points)
http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/gdal_utilities.html

To make it work in win98 I:
1) Edited SetFW.bat per instructions
2) Increased environment space in DOS window from "Auto" to 1024
(overkill?)
3) Reloaded missing imagehlp.dll from win98 CD

OR ELSE, NOT RECOMMENDED

III. Leica ERDAS ViewFinder 2.1
View, Re-project and output in GeoTiF format. View of MrSid did not
seem to capture projection info, preventing re-projection. GeoTIF to
GeoTiF reprojection and Output to file worked, but I haven't figured
out how / whether it will crop for tile making.

Windows interface, slow. No cropping - no good in my book!
