and he will need to first take a Commercial Glider check ride..
before the CFIG practical... there are some places that will give both rides
the same day.. but some FSDOs argue not to do that.

Hi all. I currently have a CFIH and commercial glider, sometime this
year I would like to get my CFIG. Question is do I need an
endorsement to take the CFIG written?

You do not. The relevant regulation is:

61.183 Eligibility requirements.
To be eligible for a flight instructor certificate or rating a person
must:
(d) Receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor on the
fundamentals of instructing listed in 61.185 of this part appropriate
to the
required knowledge test;
(e) Pass a knowledge test on the areas listed in 61.185(a)(1) of this
part,
unless the applicant:
(1) Holds a flight instructor certificate or ground instructor
certificate
issued under this part;
(f) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed
in
61.185(a)(2) and (a)(3) of this part that are appropriate to the
flight
instructor rating sought;

Note that the requirement for endorsement (d) covers only the FOI, and
(e)(1) exempts you from that. There is no requirement for an
endorsement to take the subject area test specified in (f).

Since you already hold a CFIH, you will only need to take a brief 25
question test specific to gliders.
