That is an old joke from the 1930s. That tune starts
out with a descending melodic line; as the bi-planes
slowed up and approached stall speed the rigging wires
would hum a lower and lower pitch. People, especially
instructors, would say the wires were playing 'Nearer,
My God, To Thee.' It fits and it is a strong message
on base or final.
