GM "converted" a gas V8 to diesel once. It led to mass recalls and
class-action lawsuits IIRC.

Rover did have a diesel/petrol engine for many years it was a 2.25l (later
2.5). It started as a diesel and weighed ~600lb for 77hp (petrol) or 62hp
(diesel).
