Default Time to Close Bader Field

Time to Close Bader Field

Atlantic City Weekly

"Bader Field was the world's first "airport," having been referred to as
such by a reporter in the early 20th century. But the municipal airport
has witnessed many changes to the surrounding landscape since then.
Nearby neighborhoods have grown more crowded and the land adjacent to
the airstrip now is home to a baseball stadium and the Flyers Skate Zone
facility.

Never mind that jets are banned from Bader Field and that this pilot was
violating the law by attempting to land here. As long as the airport is
there, it will invite human error and bad judgement as a matter of
course. The residents of Chelsea Heights and the fans attending
ballgames are at risk as long as the airport is there. Atlantic City
officials have known this for years and have fought to close the airport
for as long as most of us can remember. "

[I believe the minor leauge ballpark was built ON airport land, not
adjacent to it. I also believe FAA requires at least part of airport
property revenue to be used to improve the airport, although ballpark
revenue does not seem to have been used for airport improvements.

Grant Obligations to keep Bader open expire in 2006. The city plans to
close the airport immediately following the expiration.]
