If this were a GPS overlay approach, I would not expect that
performance.

On the other hand, if this is a VOR approach without an overlay, then
why would you not want to put the CDI into VOR mode? You need to have
at least one VOR receiver tuned to the approach, and the moving map on
the Garmin 530 will give you GPS backup no mater what the CDI button
selects.
