I'd go 100% with carry less.

I bought a cheap lightweight bag with lots of pockets and it worked
really well but I got fed up with carrying all the weight, especially
on one arm/shoulder. I now have a smaller bag and removed everything I
could do without. In addition I have a separate headset bag which also
has my timer, spare glasses and fuel dip stick.

I'd never go for leather it just adds extra weight for carrying and
extra load in the aircraft.
