Yep - but the left wingers is pushing gay marriage, not the right wing.

Exactly, just like the left wing pushed interracial marriage, women's
suffrage, the dismantling of segregation laws, repeal of laws against birth
control and non-procreative sex...

The right-wing strategy is constant: after it has lost its struggle for
repression on some particular issue, it disavows its stance on that issue
and insists that conservatism isn't like that anymore. But as long as a
particular struggle is still ongoing, the right wingers still battle for the
repressive side and claim that they're correct to do so.
