Foreign vs. American registry - based on earlier threads, it is

almost
cost prohibitive to re-register a foreign registered aircraft into

the
United States.

I imported an Arrow a while back and it was pretty painless except
that the wire service bank gave me a bad exchange rate quote. They
fixed it later and refunded the extra $1500.

I used Aeroprice extensively on my search and found it easy and
helpful.

Assuming ADs and SBs have been c/w, the big variable is whether the
previous owner has been relaxed or anal about minor problems that
eventually become major ones. Somebody on the Cherokee site a year or
so ago discovered severe spar corrosion after buying a Cherokee and
ended up parting out the plane, as the cost of repair exceeded the
value of the aircraft.

I'll wholeheartedly agree about the previous owners' attitude about
maintenance. I don't think the little items can be much of a shock
though because 1) they are little, and 2) they are usually obvious. It
is those darn A/Ds that can get you though. Look at the 540 crank issue
the OP was discussing. There is no where on the AOPA estimator to allow
for this unless you know it beforehand and put it in manually. I'm not
sure about aeroprice, but this is just one example.

Did you bring your bird in from Canada Paul? Many posters have
complained and cried over the hassle getting an Airworthiness
Certificate from the US if any work has been done in Canada. I've
avoided looking at Canadian planes just because of all the negative
press I saw here in r.a.o. and r.a.p. grops. What about Mexico or South
America?
