Default What a/c is this and what was it designed for?

This was a NASA modified F-5 with a nose designed to reduce the strenght of
shock waves produced during supersonic flight. The idea is to find a shape
that will allow supersonic flight at higher altitudes over populated areas
without a detectable "boom". What little I read about it was that the
results were not as good as expected.

At the Tico Airshow Saturday. What performance factors was the a/c
designed to explore?
