MKII Yaw String "recall"
A whole lot less serious than fixing a wing spar . . .
Free replacement offer:
If you purchased a MKII "high tech" Yaw String during the past two years it
may have an appearance defect. If so, you may obtain a free replacement.
(This offer applies only to the MKII with "pie shaped base" - not the older
"baseball diamond" shape base.) Replacement offer expires 31 May '07. To get
your free replacement, remove the yaw string (instructions for removal
below) and send the plastic portion of the turbulator base, along with a
*stamped* self-addressed envelope, to:
John Morgan
194 Taylor Creek Rd.
Gardnerville, NV 89460
Please specify yarn color desired for your replacement, as the MKII is now
available with original bright red, royal blue, mid-sky blue, or yellow
yarn.
To remove your old MKII: Use a finger nail or knife edge to lift up a corner
of the clear plastic base cover. Be careful not to touch the canopy if you
use a knife edge. Grasp the base cover and slowly pull straight off using
fingers or needle nose pliers. This will leave the clear adhesive behind on
your canopy. Roll the adhesive layer off the canopy using your thumb or
finger pressure. It will easily come cleanly off, leaving no adhesive
residue.
The defect and cause: The MKII base is constructed as a sandwich of clear
pressure sensitive adhesive with a clear plastic cover. The natural wool
yarn is secured between these two layers, exiting via a small hole in the
top surface. This assembly will have a slight bulge in the adhesive caused
by the yarn. When installed, the adhesive normally conforms enough to
flatten out this yarn bulge. However, over time two small gaps or bubbles
may form on either side of the yarn. Pushing down on the base temporarily
eliminates the bubbles but they'll be back. The bubbles don't affect
performance of course, but people purchase the MKII for its superior
performance *and* appearance.
The fix: A small flute or channel is now pressed into the plastic base cover
prior to final assembly. This flute provides a place for the yarn without
causing a bulge in the adhesive. The base remains transparent when installed
and performance is otherwise exactly as in the previous version.
If you don't already have a MKII, they are available for $10 USD. I also
sell the Quiet Vent kit, $5 USD. The QV quiets the air noise from the
Mecaplex flip-out side vent by 10 dba (measured in ASH26E @ 60 knots with
all other vents closed) so you can get fresh air without all the noise. The
QV is transparent when installed. To order either or both, send payment
(check or cash) to above address along with SSAE. Your satisfaction is
guaranteed.
All the best,
