Is a gift to the CFI appropriate/traditional/required/expected?

I am not a CFI so I don't know if it is expected or traditional, but when I
received my PPL I gave mine a cash tip inside a thank-you card. Many of the
younger CFIs do not make a lot of money and I know this one sincerely
appreciated the Ben Franklin.

I did the exact same for my CFI. Wonder if it was the same card too?
