You can also add to that his work in the Pacific theatre with P-38 pilots on
fuel management that helped them get more range and improve their chances of
making it back from those long over water missions. Flying several missions
and being unofficially credited with downing a couple Jap planes.
These actions and those in the "Spirit" make him a hero, a flawed one but
still a hero! His personal failings were many but despite them I will always
admire what he did in the air and give it the proper respect.
