If your telescope didn't track it properly, then this *might*
be a multiple image of TiPS (Tether Physics and Survivability
Experiment). (1996-029-F; Spacecom catalog #23937)

It's two small satellites linked by a 4 kilometer tether.
Sometimes the tether glows like a fluorescent light.
