I had one back in 1973 in a Skylane. The wing tank bladders were
collapsed and I did not recognize it. Gas gages were ok and I visually
check the tanks and they showed "full". I ran out of gas about 2.5 hours
to soon. Landed in a frozen wheat field in SW Kansas. Beautiful landing!
I am not sure how you could protect your self from this problem. I
always like to have one hour reserve. (I guess that would not have
helped here either)
