Huh. That has basically been my experience.

Whenever I have called them from home, the hold times have been so
long that I have given up and gotten info via DUATS before actually
talking to a human. (I am a relatively new pilot, and would prefer to
talk to a human who can help interpret the raw data and give me any
additional insights... but if no human is available, I do my best.)

Whenever I have called them from my cell phone, I have either not
gotten through, or been connected to a briefer who only knows about
the Boston area, and can not patch me through to someone who can tell
me about California, where I now reside.

As a result, I have given up on FSS. DUATS and other online sources
are all I use now. :-(
