With easy access to each other as safety pilots, they'd probably do it
faster and for less money. They can do productive and loggable
foggle time during the course of normal flying.

Actually that is probalby a really good idea. Have the whole family do
the instrument together. Study nights, flying days. Each taking turns
in the left seat with the others in the back. Most university courses
have students in the back while others fly. You learn a lot sitting in
the back. I would bet this would be the cheapest way to get the ratings
for all of you.
