largely scorned in the 50's and 60's as cheap
and poor quality.

Well at least that was an improvement from the 30s and 40s when they
were reputed to produce crap AND have poor eyesight and be poor
marksmen to boot.

Nowadays the Jap cars are not doing so well in terms of quality.
