The exemption has to be renewed every two years, and

When the only glass aircraft around were sailplanes,
we got the exemption [I believe for performance reasons,
possibly for appearance - anyone know the real history
?].
For the last few years I have wandered around Oshkosh
and looked at other glass aircraft, experimentals and
LSAs. Some have an external metal dataplate, others
do not. Maybe the requirement has fallen into abeyance,
or maybe individuals have asked for and received similar
exemptions. Perhaps it is time for the industry, rather
than only the SSA, to ask for a permanent general waiver
for all glass aircraft. Internal metal dataplates
appear to serve the same purpose.

The current extension expires October 2008.
