If you want a real answer to this, maybe you should try doing a very
small survey on other newsgroups. Pick a bunch of non-military,
non-technology oriented groups, and simply ask people which three
aircraft they think were most important. Order the results, and filter
out everything that has been on national TV news the past 6 months.
Anything with a 10% or higher score should do well.
Everyone here is seriously biased (definately includes me), and knows
too much about aviation to give an answer representative of the
general population.
Its the names that the general population knows that will go down in
history, the other (often much more deserving) types will only be
remembered by those interested in the subject matter.
