I use a news server and Outlook Express. With a few simple filters
I
eliminate 95% of the spam. Learn about a free news server here;
http://news.aioe.org/ , you probably already have Outlook Express.
Or try using a dedicated newsreader rather than a mail client. In the
Linux world Thunderbird can read newsgroups, but Pan is better at it.
IMO the best Windows reader is Forte's Agent, which runs without killfile
facilities unless toy register it ($29) which turns on excellent
filtering.
Personally, I won't read news with a web browser. The interface is poor
and I strongly dislike Google Groups' page layout. Using a web browser to
read news is like taking a shower in a raincoat: you can do it, but WHY?
