SeeYou Mobile achieved L/D question
Two of the most useful features to me in SeeYou Mobile, (or any other
soaring software) is the ability to display the L/D to any point, and
more importantly, your actual, achieved L/D over the ground in real
time. If you are flying to maximize your L/D over the ground, the
advantage is that for any combination of wind component or lift/sink,
you can change your speed and see the result without resorting to
calculations, rules of thumb, etc. The downside is that if the
software calculates the achieved L/D instantly, then every bump or dip
will result in a wildly varying readout. The L/D achieved must be
damped and averaged over some period of time to be useful. If this is
too long, then changes in speed will take too long to display a
corresponding change in the current L/D making it less useful to fine
tune your speed into, say, a debilitating headwind. SeeYou Mobile
appears to either have a pretty long average with a slow response, or
my old Phoebus has the world’s flattest polar. Does anyone know over
what period of time the achieved L/D is averaged in SeeYou Mobile, or
know of any way to adjust it? I can’t find anything about it on
their site and wondered if anyone knows before I contact them. If I
am fundamentally wrong about any of the above, please feel free to
straighten me out. I just want to learn, not argue.
Thanks… Don
