and the ceiling mounted hose reel is a piece of standard air hose. I
had been meaning to tidy it up with a neatly installed hard line for
years and had been thinking of using PVC. I'll spend the next
procrastination phase considering copper.

If your air hose is big enough to support your flow rate, just use some PVC
pipe to make a neat conduit for it. It will pretty things up, if properly
installed it will get rid of your low spots, and it will be perfectly safe.
