Even the tongue-in-cheek "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying
Machines" was more convincing.

Which itself was a sequel to "Those Magnificent Men in their
Jaunty Jalopies", IIRC.

Oops ... it's the other way around.
TMMITFM came first (1965), followed by Those _Daring_ Young Men in
Their Jaunty Jalopies (1969). The latter was originally titled Monte
Carlo or Bust -- title changed for distribution in US and Oz.
Both directed by the same fellow, Ken Annakin.


As in Annakin Skywalker? Hollywood types do tend to
keep some names alive.

It seems a lot of people thought that, not just you (and me). But when K.
C. Annakin died this past April there was enough chatter in fandom about the
presumed connection that George Lucas, who knew Annakin, issued a statement
denying he took his friend's name for the character's name.

Archie Leach in Fish Called Wanda being named for
Cary Grants original name, etc.

IIRC there's a completely forgettable flick in which the villain is called
William Pratt -- Boris Karloff's real name.
