As an Air Cadet in '53 I had a 30 minute air experience flight from RAF
Central Flying School, Little Rissington
in the back seat of a Meteor 7.
No ejector seat, "in the event of an emergency just climb onto the wing
and dive below the stabiliser"

Lucky you. My couple of years in the ATC ca 1955 gained me about 20 hrs
in
Fighter Command Communication Squadron Ansons, mainly 'locals' but
occasionally a longer hop to RAF St Mawgan and an occasional trip in a
Coastal Command Dakota. These were at RAF Bovingdon. One of the squadrons
had a DH Devon but never managed to get a flight in that likewise the
Meteors which were single seat Mk 8's. A week at ATC camp (St Athan)
gained
me no flying at all. IIRC there were too many cadets for the number of a/c
available. The only a/c I saw were some sorry looking Supermarine Swifts
in
one of the hangers.

Still ...... happy days ;~))

My first ever flight was in an RAF Tiger Moth ( in trainer colours) from
Harwarden, that was seat of the pants stuff, then like you boring hours in
Avro Ansons and a night flight in a navigation trainer Vickers Varsity,
fitted out with about 10 navigators desks & with 4 radomes down the fuze
for sextant readings.
I have Googled & found several pics of Varsity's with a single waist radome
( eg at Brooklands Museum) but not with 4 , so this must have been a
special.
