You might do worse than look at avidemux:

It is an Open Source app and runs on Linux/Windows/OS X/BSD. I've used it
briefly for format conversion (FlyCamOne AVI - MPEG), which it did
without problems. None of the other programs I tried could read FlyCamOne
AVI. It was pretty easy to use too.
