Sometime during late 2003 or early 2004 the crash site of F5E Lightning
44-24229 on Plynlimon,Mid Wales was attacked by souvenir hunters who
used hack saws to remove the supercharger and several smaller parts from
the crash site including a wing flap. The removal of these parts was
carried out without the permission of the landowner or the MOD. A reward
is now being offered for information on the whereabouts of the parts
removed.
The aircraft crashed On September 11th 1945,the pilot Lt Xenophen
E.Eugenedes was killed. The wreckage of the aircraft was left on the
crash site and has been regarded for many years as a memorial to the
pilot. The crash site is remote, the nearest vehicle access being over
two miles away and the weight of the parts removed is considerable, the
supercharger alone weighs over 100lbs. obviously those responsible were
organised and went equipped.
