I can tell you of one of the worst commercial flights of my life, all
care of PanAm.
In 1983 I was on a PanAm flight from Johannesburg to JFK via Monrovia.
The 747 was well worn and most of the interior seemed to be held
together with non-matching fasteners and duct tape. Throughout the AC
while in flight there were interior panels coming loose. when crew were
advised the response was a figurative roll of the eyes.
The stop over in Monrovia was about 11 PM, all passengers were held on
board for almost 2 hours until the AC fueling & service was completed.
Stuck out on the apron of the Monrovia International Airport, the fetid
tropical funk was not tempered with air conditioning since the plane
was totally powered down.
Then there was the smell. All of the doors had been opened to provide
some ventilation thereby giving all onboard the opportunity to savor
the aroma of what seemed like a giant sewerage plant situated at the
end of the runway, tasked with dealing with the total human waste
output of Liberia, but less than capable of doing that capably for a
small village better served with septic tanks.
That lingering fragrance stayed with us until landing in the crisp
Winter freshness of JFK.
I never flew PanAm again, that flight told me of an airline in trouble.
